Koy is Our Boy
By Tony Romeo
phillypage2 columnist (11-21-2002)

Why is Koy our Boy? WHY THE HELL NOT, that’s why. It’s a little known or seen tact here in Philly, but at PhillyPage2, we our going to take lemons, and make a little lemonade… (And not the Lemon-Aide that you 700 levelers are used to, the kind you make in trashcans, sinks, dark stadium corners, NOT so dark stadium corners, and virtually anywhere you can, as long as it is not IN a toilet.) No, I mean real lemon-aide, as the age-old proverb recommends. Koy Detmer is not Donovan McNabb, granted, but Koy is at least fun. Fun is an element that has been all too vacant at most Birds games this year. I wrote about it earlier, and I will write it again here, this town has TOTALLY taken this team, and it’s chances for granted. When we win, fans shrug and say, “We’re supposed to win. No big deal.” When we lose, the steets are lined with carcasses of another round of ex-bandwagoneers, crippled from yet another jump, OFF the bandwagon. And in between those two extremes, there exists little room for fun. Too many have been sleeping, criticizing or doubting their way through this regular season, waiting for when it really counts. Not enjoying the ride, just waiting to see if we win a bowl or not, AND THEN, being happy.

Enter Koy Detmer. NOT Donovan by any stretch. But the guy is a gamer. The guy is fun, and he plays with a lot of heart. He has a sense of humor. He may even be a little off his rocker. He does the best celebration dance by a white man, EVER. He knows the offense and has been with this team a lot longer then many of the 2nd string qb’s having success in the league, AS WE SPEAK.

So, still ask why Koy is OUR boy? (That is rhetorical, but if you still are, re-read the last paragraph, Jackhole!) The point is, Koy is everything Philly likes, he is gritty, he is a cagey, he hasn’t shaved in a couple weeks. He is every under-sized old school Flyer we love, your Sutter’s and Linsmans, and Poulins, guys short on size strength and ability, but deep in heart. He is Lenny Dykstra, that little engine that couldn’t, until someone gave him a chance. He is Vince Papale, the guy that shouldn’t be on the team, but found a way to be there anyway. And maybe, just maybe, he is one of these fairy tale stories that happen other places, EVERY year. The second stringer, that comes in and gets it done when the starter goes down.

“Nice Try Asshole, but he still can’t beat, Garcia, or Farve!!” The most jaded of you still say. To that I can only retort that the season is still barely half over. By the time we would face either team in the playoffs, there is a shot that maybe their QB’s go down as well. And/or in one game, anything can happen.

So, I’m giving my man, Koy, a chance. It’s like Andy Reid says, EVERY post game press conference, “Wins are hard to come by in this league, no matter who you play…” Even if we are not the favorites in many of our upcoming contests, I am sure Koy will be just as tough as almost every underdog the Eagles have faced this year, and it is a fact, that his supporting cast will be much tougher.

And the best part, the part I am really looking forward to, is when Koy does win, maybe fans will go back to enjoying wins the way we are supposed to.
